Synopsis

Prior to their wedding, Gil and Sydney said and did everything right. Both devout Christians with a desire to spread God’s message, their idea of marriage was perfectly aligned with what the bible says it should be; a life-long union in which she was to respect and submit, and he was to love her as Jesus loves the church.

However, when shortly after the wedding Sidney moved out and filed for legal separation, Gil was not only left emotionally devastated, but also on the road to facing the hardest year of his life. “Divorcing God” is one couple’s story of love, marriage, and what happens when the realities of modern day life collide with the biblical ideals by which some 174 million Americans are trying to live their lives.

About the Title

The title of the film describes the perceived intensity of event and emotion that some Christians feel when the need to seek a divorce enters their lives. In addition to the natural grief caused by accepting the marriage’s end, they must also contend with the notion that, according to the bible, their decision to divorce is a sin which also distances them from God.
